Ford Engine Rattling noise and Rough Idle

Ford has issued a service bulletin #12-7-10 to address a Ford engine rattling noise or Ford rough idle on vehicles equipped with the 5.4L engine installed in the vehicles listed below. Ford rattling noise or Ford rough occurs when the engine is at operating temperature. In addition the check engine light may be on with these trouble codes stored:
P0022, P0021, P0340, P0341.

P0021 A Camshaft Position – Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2)
P0022 A Camshaft Position – Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2)
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

The affected vehicles are:
2004-2010 F-150
2005-2012 Navigator
2005-2010 F-250, F-350
2006-2008 Mark LT
2005-2012 Expedition

The above listed vehicles equipped with the 5.4L engine may exhibit a Ford Rattling Noise or a Ford rough idle when the engine is at operating temperature. Ford has determined the issue is caused by oscillating cam timing,

Using a scan tool with live data, monitor the cam solenoid duty cycle and cylinder head temperature while the engine is at operating temperature (200°F). Apply the parking brake and shift to Drive. Raise engine RPM to 1,500 RPM and then release the pedal. If the engine exhibits a rattling sound and a rough idle, look at the cam solenoid duty cycle data on your scan tool. If the values oscillate after returning to low idle, replace both the left and right camshaft timing oil control solenoids (VCT) with the new part numbers listed below
