Fix for P0171 Cruze, Encore

What causes P0171 Cruze, Encore

There’s flurry of service bulletins for these engines; #PI0552, PI0850A, PIP5197E and #03-06-04-030H to address multiple trouble codes on the vehicles listed below. In addition to the P0171 Cruze, Encore TSB related fixes, I’m listing a few others. The codes that show up most often are P0171, P0172, P0174, P0300, P1174 and P1175.

Steps to diagnose P0171 Cruze, Encore

Since this is a lean code, you should always start your diagnostic procedure by checking for UNMETERED air; air that is getting into the engine but not through the MAF sensor. Check for vacuum leaks and tears in the air duct from the air filter box to the throttle body.

Double check the oil filler cap to make sure it’s fully seated.

Double check that the oil dipstick is fully seated.

Double check the PCV hose for leaks or for the presence of oil. Replace the PCV valve which is part of the valve cover if you find oil in the hose.
