Diagnose and fix P0234 and or P0299 codes on Ford

Ford has issued a service bulletin #16-0013 to address P0234 and or P0299 codes on the vehicles listed below equipped with the 3.5L GTDI engine. The engines may exhibit drivability symptoms that include surging and noises described as a hiss, whoosh, whstle, grinding, growling, scraping or an air rush. Follow the test procedures and fix listed below.

2011-2015 F-150 with the 3.5L GTDI engine
2015 Expedition, Transit with the 3.5L GTDI engine
2015 Lincoln Navigator with the 3.5L GTDI engine

Diagnose and fix the P0234 and or P0299 codes on Ford vehicles

Start by checking the build date. If the vehicle was built on or before 2/28/2015, proceed with the fix. If the vehicle was built after that date, this bulletin does NOT apply to your symptoms.

Next, remove the hose at the turbocharger wastegate actuator and connect a cooling system pressure tester and gauge to the turbocharger wastegate actuator. Apply increasing pressure to the wastegate actuator while monitoring the wastegate actuator rod. The rod should begin to extend at 3-9-psi and be fully extended at 12-19 PSI.

In addition, you should notice the turbocharger wastegate shaft and arm moving from closed to fully open in a smooth motion. If the wastegate rod does operate  in a smooth motion, this service bulletin does NOT apply and you should follow the shop manual to determine the cause of the symptoms.

If the wastegate rod does not extend smoothly or does not respond according to the pressures listed above, replace the turbocharger with the updated parts listed below.
