Rattle from front end on Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent, Saturn Vue
GM has issued a new technical service bulletin 05-05-23-005A to address a rattle noise from the front of the vehicle. The noise occurs at slow speeds or on rough surfaces when the brake pedal is not applied. The bulletin applies to 2005-06 Chevrolet Equinox, 2006 Pontiac Torrent, and 2002-06 Saturn Vue vehicles. GM has issued a new caliper guide pin to address the problem. Order part #15824369. Here’s how to replace it.
Remove the wheels. Then screw two lug nuts onto the rotor to hold it in place. Next, remove the caliper by first squeezing it with a large C-clamp. Next, remove the lower caliper guide pin bolt and pivot the entire caliper upwards. Secure the caliper with mechanic’s wire to hold it out of the way. Pull the guide pin boot away from the caliper bracket and remove the pin and boot.
Apply high temperature synthetic grease to the new guide pin and bushing and reinstall on the caliper mounting bracket. Do NOT use anti-seize as the lubricant. You must use a synthetic brake grease made for this purpose (Permatex grease shown below is one example). Rotate the caliper back into position and install the bolt. Tighten to 32-ft/lbs. Then remove the lug nuts and reinstall the wheels. Torque the lug nuts to the specified torque. Then, with the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal several times until it’s firm. Do not be surprised if the pedal goes to the floor a few times before firming up.
