How to locate and test a Coil Pack Misfire
Coil pack misfires are very difficult to diagnose for the average do it yourselfer. You don’t have a scope and if you have a scanner, it probably cannot read the Mode $6. Mode $6 is the real live data that the computer stores BEFORE it sets a code.
But there is a quick and fairly reliable way to test a coil right in your own garage. Just mix up some salt water and use a mist sprayer to wet down the suspected coil. If your misfire happens more often under load, switch on your A/C and rev the engine a bit. The high voltage will latch onto that salt water and you should be able to hear or see the spark traveling through the water to ground. This trick finds even the smallest cracks in coil pack towers.
