EPA continues crackdown on emissions cheaters

EPA shuts down manufacturers of emissions defeat devices

EPA fined Diesel Ops LLC and Orion Diesel LLC have been ordered to pay $10 million for manufacturing, selling and installing aftermarket devices that bypass car emissions controls.

In addition to fining the companies, the EPA also fined the owners with a civil penalty. Nicholas Piccolo, was hit with a $455,925 civil penalty for failing to respond to an information request pursuant to the Clean Air Act as well as a nearly $1 million judgment for fraudulent transfers in violation of the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.

“Defeat devices violate Clean Air Act emissions requirements that protect public health and the environment, including by protecting vulnerable communities that are disproportionately impacted by air pollution,” Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, said in the release.
