Key minerals needed to make EV batteries
Lithium mining methods
Lithium, cobalt and nickel are the three key minerals needed to make the lithium-ion batterie. Two processes are used most commonly to extract lithium today; hard-rock mining and evaporitic extraction from the brines below salt flats.
Hard rock mining is commonly used in Australia. However, the lithium deposits in Chile, Bolivia and Argentina are mostly under salt flats, so the evaporitic method is used.
Nickel mining methods
Nickel mining is responsible for devastation of fresh water and marine ecosystems in Canada, Russia, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.
