F150 clicking noise
F150 makes clicking noise and is hard to start after refueling
Ford has issued a service bulletin #12-3-10 to address a Ford clicking noise and hard start after refueling on the vehicles listed below. The Ford clicking noise and hard start after refueling can also be accompanied by these trouble codes: P0171,
P0174, P0316, P144A, AND/OR P1450
P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)
P0316 Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions
P144A Evaporative Emission System Purge Vapor Line Restriced/Blocked
P1450 Unable to bleed up fuel tank vacuum
This bulletin applies to
2009-2010 F-150
2009-2011 Navigator
2009-2011 E-150, E-250, E-350, E-450, Expedition
2011 F-250, F-350
Some 2009-2011 E-Series, Expedition, Navigators built on or before 4/15/2011 and 2009-2010 F150 and 2011 F250/350 built on or before 11/1/2010 may present clicking noise in the engine compartment, along with hard starting after refueling and these trouble codes P0171, P0174, P0316, P144A, AND/OR P1450. Ford has determined the problem may be caused by a faulty canister purge valve.

9L3Z-9E730-C Purge valve
While the vehicle is running and exhibiting the clicking noise, disconnect the electrical connector from the underhood evaporative emissions purge valve. If the clicking noise stops, replace the valve with an updated part number shown below. If the vehicle exhibits hard starting or stores any of these trouble codes, P0171, P0174, P0316, P144A, AND/OR P1450 replace the purge valve with the updated model
