Ford has issued a service bulletin 21-2033 to address a problem where the transmission doesn’t shift into the intended gear on the vehicles listed below. This will show up as an incorrect shifter lever position. Ford has discovered the cause as the bushing at the transmission end of the shifter lever cable resulting in a mismatch of cluster and selected gear position.

Steps to replace the bushing
Remove the selector lever cable bracket bolt
Disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission lever and the bracket.
Disengage the selector lever cable holding clip and disconnect the selector lever cable
Remove the shifter bushing
Install the new bushing and protective cap
