A bad Totally Integrated Power Module sits under the hood and is a known problem for

• Headlight won’t turn on
• Horn goes off intermittently
• Headlights turn on by themselves

You probably have a faulty totally integrated power module (TIPM)

In an effort to integrate electronics control in one place, Chrysler combined a fuse box and relay center into one unit. The TIPM works in conjunction with body control modules to turn relays on and off based on a digital signal from the body control modules. That eliminated a lot of extra wiring.

In these vehicles the switches, like the headlight, horn, etc, don’t actually switch power to the headlights or horn. Instead, they act like inputs to the body control module. When you turn on the headlights using the switch, the body control module see your headlight request and sends a digital signal to the TIPM. The TIPM then activates the headlight relay.

The problem is that this is an electronic unit with a circuit board and digital components and Chrysler simply didn’t do a good job of protecting it against the elements. So the circuit board and the electrical contacts are exposed to water and road salt. This eventually eats up the copper contacts or builds up surface contamination on the circuit board. Eventually it gets to the point where the headlights won’t turn on, or will turn on by themselves. Same with the horn or other electrical devices.

In the past you’d have to buy a new TIPM from the dealer. These units generally run around $500. However, Dorman Products now offer remanufactured units that can save you about $200. The best part is that they’re plug and play so you don’t have to do any reprogramming.

I recommend choosing the Dorman TIPM or finding a rebuilder to recondition yours
