P0136

Fix code P0136

A P0136 code is defined as Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2). This sensor is located on the engine bank that houses #1 cylinder and is located AFTER the catalytic converter.

When you turn the ignition switch to RUN, power is provided to the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor. The heater gets its ground from the PCM so it can monitor heater operation. If the heater doesn’t return ground to the PCM, it sets trouble code P0136

Check for power and ground to the oxygen sensor heater

This is a circuit problem and you should not automatically replace the oxygen sensor. In some cases, a blown fuse, corrosion in the electrical connector, or a short to ground in the wiring harness can cause a P0136 trouble code.

Always start your diagnositics by checking for power and ground in the electrical connector to the oxygen sensor heater wiring. If you see power and ground, then the oxygen sensor heater is faulty and that’s what’s causing the P0136
