Ford has issued a service bulletin #11-10-5 to address a problem with P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 and other trouble codes. The bulletin applies to the vehicles listed below
2010-12 Fusion, Escape, Milan, Mariner, Transit Connect and
2011-12 Lincoln MKZ
The bulletin refers to the above vehicles equipped with either the 2.0L, 2.5L or 3.0L engines. These engines may cause a P1285, P1299, or P0128 code. The engine temperature may be cold but report as hot, or may be hot and report as cold. The engine cooling fan operation will also be negatively affected and may turn on and off at inappropriate times. The incorrect temperature reading can also cause a rough engine, lock of power and misfire codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, and P0316.
Ford recommends inspecting the cam cover trough to make sure it’s clear of debris like leaves, wasps, dirt, etc. Also make sure the drain hole near cylinder 4 is clear. Dry out the spark plug wells and replace any affected ignition coils
Next, inspect the connector C1164 at CHT for water contamination. If the terminals are corroded, rusted, or disintegrated, install a new pigtail and sensor.
