Fix P2096, Escape, Focus, Fusion
Ford has issue a service bulletin #16-0101 to address a P2096 trouble code on the vehicles listed below. Ford has determined that motor oil my migrate from the variable valve timing (VVT) oil control solenoids and flow through the engine wire harness to the catalyst monitor sensor (CMS).

2013-2014 Escape, Focus, Fusion
2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ
Engine: 2.0L GTDI built 9/1/2012 through 8/1/2013
Symptoms of P2096
Trouble code P2096 (post catalyst fuel trim system too lean bank 1) is stored in the PCM. If your vehicle has the 2.0L GTDI engine and was built 9/1/2012 through 8/1/2013 do NOT replace the catalytic converter.
Disconnect and inspect the electrical connectors at the VVT oil control solenoids and the CMS. You’re looking for signs of motor oil. Use a clean paper towel to wipe the connectors. If you see oil contamination, remove and replace the VVT oil control solenoids, CMS and wiring harness.
Remove the air cleaner, remove cowl panel grille
On a Focus ST, remove the PCM
On Fusion, Escape and MKZ vehicles with all-wheel drive (AWD), remove the rear driveshaft.
