Service Power Steering Message on Buick Verano

Fix for Service Power Steering Message Buick

Some 2012-2015 model year Buick Veranos may experience intermittent power steering assist, increased steering effort, and/or power steering warning messages due to a software issue. This occurs shows up as a service power steering message and happens most often during low speed parking lot maneuvers. General Motors has issued service bulletin #PIC5640 to address the problem.

The bulletin applies to Veranos equipped with electric power steering. According to GM, the power steering control module (PSCM) software logic may not detect a stalled motor condition correctly. This can lead to reduced or intermittent assist from the electric steering system.

Dealerships or independent shops can update the power steering control module software as a repair. Technicians will reprogram the module with improved logic diagnostics to detect motor problems better. The software update often resolves the steering complaints, restoring normal system operation.

Owners may notice the power steering turning off and getting difficult to turn, followed by a warning light or message. This usually lasts a few seconds before restoring. Having the software update performed seems to eliminate these intermittent power steering problems for most drivers.

The Service Power Steering Message may appear intermittently while driving. Trouble code U0131 may also be set.

Fix U0131 and Service Power Steering Message

GM recommends checking for a loose connection at location X5 in the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center. Check the 80 amp fuse for the power steering control module. If X5 connection is loose, repair as necessary and verify repairs.
