U0404 and TSB 21-016-06 Jeep

Fix U0404 and TSB 21-016-06 on Jeep

What is U0404

Chrysler has issued TSB 21-016-06 to address a U0404 trouble code on the vehicles listed below. The code is defined as: U0404-IMPLAUSIBLE DATA RECEIVED FROM ESM. You may also see a P0607 trouble code set. The ESM is the electronic shift module (shifter mechanism). The ESM sends digital data on the CAN digital buss to the transmission control module (TCM) to tell it you’ve selected a gear. The U0404 code sets when the TCM detects an incorrect digital signal from the ESM or there’s a problem with the front control module (FCM) or the TCM.

Prior to this TSB 21-016-06, the only fix was to replace the entire ESM . Now Chrysler is making replacement parts available.

4. Then remove Remove The Shifter Bezel. To do that, first disconnect the shifter bezel wiring connector. Then remove the torx bit screws using a TX20 bit. Remove the two bottom screws for Transfer Case (TC) switch using torx bit, and disconnect the TC wiring connector (only on some models). Lift the shifter bezel upwards while making sure the solenoid wiring connector remains in place. You may have to remove the heat duct by pulling to the side to get access to the TC switch screws.

Remove the Trim Slide Guides

Locate slide guides at the rear of the shifter. Then use a box cutter to trim to a smooth transition to the base of the shifter housing.

Reinstall the shifter bezel

Ensure the solenoid connector is seated in the shifter housing and make sure that the connector pins of the interface in the bezel and the wiring connector are both upright and aligned prior to shifter bezel installation. Then align the transportation tube onto the top of the shifter lever, lower the new shifter bezel onto the shift lever and discard the tube. Next, position the shifter bezel on the shifter housing and connector and install the screws in the bin and at the housing. Torque the screws to 1.5 – 2.1 Nm (13.5 – 18.5 in. lbs.).

If equipped, install the TC switch with two screws from the bottom, torque the screws to 0.89 – 1.11 Nm (7.8 – 9.8 in. lbs.). Connect the wiring connector to TC switch. Connect the wiring connector to the shifter bezel.
Ensure cable routing does not interfere with slide guides and slider exit. Install Shift Knob And Trim Mat.

Verify that shifter is in the neutral position

Position knob with chrome ring on lever and seat fully.
Turn lower chrome ring of shift knob clockwise 90°.
Place the trim mat into shifter bezel bin.

Verify the brake transmission shift interlock operation

Verify that the key can only be removed in the PARK position. When the shift lever is in PARK, the ignition key cylinder should rotate freely from ACC to LOCK. When the shifter is in any other gear or neutral position, the ignition key cylinder should not rotate to the LOCK position.

Shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition key cylinder is in the ACC position and the brake pedal is not depressed.

Shifting out of PARK should not be possible while applying normal force on the shift lever and ignition key cylinder is in the ACC, ON, or START positions unless the foot brake pedal is depressed approximately 12mm (1/2 in.).

Shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition key cylinder is in the LOCK position, regardless of the brake pedal position.

Shifting between any gears, NEUTRAL or into PARK may be done without depressing foot brake pedal with ignition switch in ACC, ON, or START positions.

Install the center floor console using the procedures outlined in the shop manual
