GM has issued a service bulletin 09-06-04-007A to address a Gas gauge stuck or not working FUEL GAUGE STUCK, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, trouble codes P0455, P0461 on the following vehicles:

2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu/Max;
2008 Chevrolet Malibu (Classic;
2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu
2005-2009 Pontiac G6

GM has determined that the fuel vapor vent line inside the fuel tank may interfere with the travel of the fuel level float arm. This prevents the float from rising above the ¾ mark and the gas gauge appears to be stuck. This can also set the check engine light on and store trouble codes P0455/P0461 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Performance. In some cases the problem can cause a no start condition.

To fix the problem remove the fuel tank and lift the fuel pump module out of the tank. Then move the sender vent line to the side of the fuel tank sending unit. Rotate the vapor line to the spring guide bar. Next, add a zip tie (GM #12337820) to secure the vapor line and prevent it from rotating forward and interfering with the fuel level float.

Install a new O-ring seal, GM P/N 22682111, onto the fuel sender and reinstall the fuel pump module. Connect all the lines and reinstall the tank.

Clear the codes
