Learn the difference between the different types wrenches
Wrenches are essential tools for auto mechanics, and they come in many varieties: open end, box end, combination, flare nut, and ratcheting. As you progress in your career, you can fill out your wrench set with all of those types. But when you’re starting out, stick with combination wrenches.
A 12-point combination wrench is great for 90% of the work you’ll do. A 12-point wrench allows you to grab onto the bolt head or nut, turn it, and get another bite every 30°. With a 6-point wrench, you’ll need to turn the wrench 60°.
Here’s where you need 6-point combination wrenches: Any time you’re working on a rusted bolt or nut, a 6-point wrench will give you a better chance of loosening the bolt without stripping it. 12-point wrenches and sockets will strip a rusted bolt head or nut much easier than a 6-point wrench or socket. You won’t use a 6-point wrench often, but when you need one, it’ll save the day.
Why you need ratcheting combination wrenches
It’s simple; they save a LOT of time and effort. And when you’re an auto tech, time is money.
