Diagnose and fix P059F Nissan Versa

Nissan has issued a service bulletin NTB14-009C regarding a P059F Nissan Versa issue. The bulletin applies to 2014 Nissan Versa vehicles built before 3N1CE2CP(*)EL 433025 and April 7, 2014. Nissan has come up with an ECM software patch for the problem. However, check the following before proceeding with the update. Follow these tests if you get a P059F Nissan Versa code and your vehicle is outside the build date included in the service bulletin

Check active grille shutter for debris

The active grille shutter is located in front of the radiator and behind the front grille. Check the shutter for any signs of snow, ice or debris that may be causing the shutter to malfunction.

Next, check for ground on pin 1 of the active grilled shutter connector.

Check fuse 27 in the IPDM in the engine compartment. With the engine running, check for power on terminal 4 of the active grille shutter connector. Power flows from the fuse to the active grille shutter relay which is energized by the ECM relay located in the wiring harness near the driver’s fender.

Pin 2 is a digital communication terminal to communicate with the ECM. You need a scope to see the square wave pattern.

Using a bidirectional scan tool, command the shutter to open and close with the scan tool. If you have power, ground and digital communication but the active grille shutter doesn’t move, replace the shutter assembly.
