Overcharged AC System: The Dangers of overcharging your AC

Learn the five symptoms of an overcharged AC system

When it comes to recharging their vehicle’s air conditioning system, many DIYers think that adding more refrigerant will give them better cooling. However, this is not the case. R-134a refrigerant has a narrow tolerance for over- and undercharging, and adding more refrigerant reduces your AC’s cooling capacity. In other words, overcharging your car’s AC system is counterproductive. How can you determine if you’ve gone overboard with the refrigerant? Here are the five most common symptoms of an overcharged AC system.

An overcharged AC system shows extremely high pressures

Overcharging can cause excessive pressure on the high and low sides of the system.

Overcharging can cause seals and joints to leak

High pressure caused by overcharging can cause weak spots or old components in the system to fail and leak. If you’ve recently added too much refrigerant and now have leaks, the overcharge is mostly likely the cause.

A squealing compressor is a sign of an overcharged system

Too much refrigerant can cause extremely high pressures that make it hard to start the compressor. It’s almost as if the compressor is locked up, which is what causes the clutch or belt to squeal.

Overcharging can cause the relief valve (if equipped) to blow off excess refrigerant

In cases of extreme overcharging, the pressure relief valve may release some refrigerant to prevent the system from bursting.

Overcharging can reduce your MPG more than normal

The AC system needs to work harder to overcome high head pressures and that consumes more energy, resulting in even lower fuel mileage.

To avoid these problems, it’s essential to charge the AC system to the manufacturer’s recommended levels and ensure the system is regularly serviced by professionals. If you suspect your system might be overcharged, it’s crucial to address the issue promptly to prevent further complications.
