Toyota Misfire
Toyota Camry Misfire and hesitation. Check engine light on
If you experience a Toyota misfire misfire on a Camry you may be looking at a binding variable valve timing actuator (VVT). The VVT actuator is driven by oil pressure to retard or advance timing. The PCM uses input from multiple sensor to determine engine load and commands oil pressure to the advance or retard side of the actuator. Use the wrong oil viscosity can affect how the VVT responds to PCM commands. If the engine experiences sludge buildup, that can also affect VVT reaction.
Shops also report that the VVT can randomly bind and not perform the commanded change in camshaft timing that results in a random misfire code. If you’ve checked ignition and it appears to be in good shape, remove the VVT mechanism and manually operate it to check for binding. If it binds on a random basis, replace it.
