Fix a Ford Focus P1450 Code
Fixing a Ford Focus P1450 Code and a P0316 Code: Causes and Solutions
A Ford Focus P1450 code is defined as: Unable To Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum. The code is set when the PCM sees excessive fuel tank vacuum while the engine runs but not when idle. A P0316 code is defined as a misfire detected on startup. The most common cause of both codes is a stuck open purge valve. This article explains how to check for a stuck open purge valve to fix a Ford Focus P1450 code.
The most common cause of Ford Focus P1450 Code
The purge valve is located in the engine compartment. It’s a solenoid valve and can fail electrically or mechanically. A stuck open purge valve is the most common cause of a Ford Focus P1450 code. Start your diagnostic by locating the purge and valve and disconnecting the electrical connector from the valve. Next, follow the hose from the purge valve back to the rear of the vehicle. You’ll find a hose connection. Disconnect that hose connection so the purge valve can’t suck any fuel vapors from the charcoal canister.
Then start the engine. Check for a vacuum at the hose end you just disconnected. If you feel vacuum, that confirms the valve is stuck open.
Before you replace the purge valve, check it for the
presence of charcoal particles. If you find those, the charcoal canister has ruptured and must be replaced, the hoses flushed, and the valve replaced.
You get a P1450 code and a P0316 code at startup because the engine is sucking in fuel vapor from the charcoal canister. That causes a misfire and the inability to pull a vacuum on the EVAP system.
