Gas gauge is wrong – GM

Gas gauge is wrong – GM

GM has issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) 09-06-04-007A to address Fuel gauge is wrong, fuel gauge stuck, trouble codes P0455, P0461, on Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura the following vehicles

2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu/Maxx
2008 Chevrolet Malibu (Classic)
2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu
2005-2009 Pontiac G6
2007-2009 Saturn AURA

This bulletin applies if the fuel gauge does not rise above the ¾ mark after filling up, or the gauge appears stuck. The check engine light may be on. The vehicle may not start due to “low fuel.” If you scan the vehicle, you may find P0455/P0461 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Performance codes stores.

The condition may be caused by a fuel vapor vent line inside the fuel tank that is touching the fuel level sensor float arm and causing it to bind. To fix the problem you must lower the fuel tank. Then disconnect the fuel pressure sensor and disconnect the sender electrical connections. Next, disconnect the evaporative emission vapor line fitting and the fuel feed line. Unlock the fuel sender lock ring and remove the sending unit. Check for interference between the internal vent tube and the sender float arm. Move the sender vent line and turn it around the side of the fuel tank sender. Rotate the vapor line to the spring guide bar. Then add a tie strap. Install a new O-ring seal on the sender and re-install the sender assembly into the tank. Install the lock ring and reconnect the fuel feed line and all other connections.
