How and when to use a thread chaser and threaded rod/bolt chaser
If you’re trying to restore threads on a bolt or axle shaft and the starting threads are in good shape, use a threaded rod/bolt chaser. Simply apply oil to the threads and screw on the chaser using a deep socket or box end wrench. When you reach the damaged threads, rotate the chaser back and forth to reform the threads. Don’t try to do it in a single turn.
If you’re trying to restore stripped threads in a tapped hole, use the threaded hole chaser and oil.
