Troubleshooting a Honda Accord P2101 Code

Understanding the Honda Accord P2101 Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

Honda has issued a service bulletin #19-034 to address a Honda Accord P2101 code, electronic throttle control system issue, and no start on the vehicles listed below. The bulletin states that the Honda Accord No Start P2101 electronic throttle control system trouble code is caused by excessive carbon deposits on the electronic throttle body.

What Does the Honda Accord P2101 Code Mean?

The P2101 code is a generic powertrain code related to the throttle actuator control (TAC) system. Specifically, it indicates a problem with the throttle actuator control motor circuit, which is responsible for controlling the opening and closing of the throttle plate. The throttle plate regulates the amount of air entering the engine, affecting the engine’s performance and efficiency.

Fix for the code

To fix a Honda Accord P2101 code the service bulletin wants you to clean the throttle body, perform a throttle body relearn and update the ECM software.

Here’s the step-by-step process

Tools and supplies you need

A new throttle body gasket. Do NOT reuse the old gasket
A can of throttle body spray cleaner.
A clean rag
A socket set

1) Remove from the intake air duct from the throttle body
2) Remove the throttle body from the engine.
3) Spray throttle body cleaner on a rag and wipe the carbon buildup. DO NOT spray the cleaner directly into the throttle body. The fluid can wick into the electronics and damage them. Always use a new throttle body gasket when performing this procedure.

5) Perform the throttle body relearn procedure below

Honda throttle body relearn procedure

• Start the engine.
• Hold the RPM at 3,000 RPM with no loads on (no heat, AC, defogger, etc) until the radiator fan comes on or until the engine temperature reaches 194°F
• Release the pedal and let the engine idle for 5 minutes with the throttle fully released.
