What to use as a temporary oil fill cap replacement

Use a soup can lid as a temporary oil fill cap

Don’t use saran wrap, tin foil, or a rubber glove as a temporary oil fill cap

Blowby gasses are HOT and can easily melt saran wrap. Worse yet, there can be periods where the oil fill port is under vacuum that can suck the saran wrap, tin foil or rubber glove into the engine. Don’t do it!

Don’t use a plastic bag or anything plastic to replace a missing oil fill cap. Instead, use a metal lid as a temporary cover for the oil fill port.

Then head to the dealer for a replacement oil fill cap. Don’t waste your time at an auto parts store (unless the dealer is closed) because they usually don’t have the right cap in stock and you don’t want a universal cap.
