Here’s an overview of how much auto mechanics make and the different ways they’re compensated.

Average auto mechanic salaries by state

The average auto technician salary in the USA is $50,627 per year, or $24.34 per hour. Entry-level positions start at $38,312 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $80,000 per year. Source: Talent.com
However, local wages vary by state, city size and population, local cost-of-living indices, and whether the shop is unionized, a dealer, independent, or chain/franchise.

Tool costs

Auto mechanics must provide their own tools and purchase specialized tools required to perform certain repairs. The tool costs for a starting auto mechanic can easily cost over $3,000, while recurring annual costs for specialized tools and tool replacement can cost upwards of $2,000. Most auto technicians invest in the most up-to-date tools to complete the job faster and make more money. For example, many technicians have moved from away from hand and air-powered tools to battery-powered tools like compact impact wrenches, ratchets, grinders, and saws.

After working in the industry for five years, it’s no uncommon for highly experienced auto mechanics to have invested almost $25,000 in hand, power, specialized tools, and tool chests. Those tool investments come out of their pocket and are no longer tax deductible.

Training costs

Some shops, mostly dealers, pay for continuing education (although they don’t always pay for the mechanics’ time while they’re in class). However, most independent and chain/franchise shops don’t pay anything for continuing education.

Uniforms and boot costs

Dealers often pay for uniforms, but few independent shops do. Similarly, no shops pay for the cost of work boots, which can run almost $600 per year.

How auto mechanics get paid

Auto mechanics can be paid in several ways:

Hourly Wage: Some, but not many, auto mechanics are paid an hourly wage, with overtime pay for hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour workweek.

Flat Rate: Under the flat rate system, mechanics are paid based on the estimated labor time for a specific repair job, regardless of the time taken. This system incentivizes efficiency but can lead to variability in earnings based on the workload and complexity of tasks.

Salary: Some mechanics, particularly those in managerial or supervisory roles, may receive a fixed salary. This provides a stable income but may not offer the same potential for high earnings as the flat rate system.

Commission: In some cases, mechanics may earn a commission based on the value of the services they upsell, such as recommended maintenance and fluid replacements. This model rewards mechanics for upselling and providing additional services.

While the average hourly wage is important, not all auto mechanics get paid on an hourly wage basis. In fact, most don’t. Most auto repair shops pay their technicians based on a flat rate system.

How the Flat Rate System Works

Standard Labor Times: Each repair job is assigned a standard labor time, often determined by industry guidelines, manufacturer recommendations, or repair manuals. For example, replacing a brake pad might take 2 hours.

Flat rate hours vary depending on who’s paying

The estimated time required to do the job varies depending on who’s paying for the work. If the work is being performed as a warranty repair at the dealer, the technician gets paid for fewer hours because the time is calculated by the carmaker. The theory behind the lower times is that a dealer mechanic is most likely working on a newer vehicle with less rust. In addition, the carmaker assumes that a dealer mechanic is more skilled in the repair because they perform the repair far more often than an independent shop might do that same repair. Here’s an example of the different flat rate times for a warranty versus non-warranty repair of a water pump on a 2017 Ford F150 with a 3.5L engine.

Notice the difference in the flat rate times for a warranty repair versus a standard customer pay repair: 1.5 hours for warranty and 2.4 hours for customer pay.

 

Mechanics are credited with the hours shown in a  Flat Rate Labor Guide. If a brake pad replacement is rated at 2 hours and the mechanic finishes it in 1.5 hours, they still earn pay for the full 2 hours. Conversely, if the job takes 3 hours, the mechanic still only gets paid for the 2 flat rate hours.

The mechanic’s pay is calculated by multiplying their flat-rate hours by their hourly wage. For instance, if a mechanic’s hourly rate is $25 and they complete a 2-hour flat-rate job, they earn $50 for that job, regardless of the actual time spent.

Benefits of the Flat Rate System

It Incentivizes Efficiency: Since mechanics can earn more by completing jobs faster than the standard labor time, they are supposedly motivated to work efficiently and handle more jobs within a given time frame.

Potential for Higher Earnings: Skilled and experienced mechanics who can consistently complete jobs quickly can significantly increase their earnings compared to an hourly wage system.

Productivity: This system encourages mechanics to stay focused and productive, as their income is directly tied to the volume of work they complete.

The Challenges and Drawbacks of the Flat Rate Pay System

Income Variability: A mechanic’s earnings can fluctuate based on the availability of work and the complexity of tasks. During slow periods, mechanics may struggle to earn a stable income.

Quality vs. Speed: The emphasis on completing jobs quickly can sometimes compromise the quality of work if mechanics rush to meet time targets, potentially leading to customer dissatisfaction and comebacks.

Complex Jobs: For particularly difficult or time-consuming repairs, the flat rate system often does not adequately compensate mechanics for their time and effort, especially if unforeseen complications arise.

Experience Discrepancies: Less experienced mechanics might find it challenging to complete jobs within the standard labor times, leading to lower earnings and frustration.

The Flat Rate Payment System From The Employer Perspective

Employers benefit from the flat rate system, which aligns labor costs with productivity. They can predict labor expenses more accurately and incentivize their workforce to maximize efficiency. The flat rate system also helps manage customer expectations by providing upfront cost estimates based on standard labor times.
