Nissan idle relearn procedure

How to perform a Nissan Idle relearn

If you’ve performed a major repair, disconnected the battery, or disconnected a MAF sensor while the engine is running, you may have to perform a Nissan idle relearn procedure (also called an idle air volume relearn procedure).

Prepare for the Nissan idle relearn

First, precondition the vehicle: Idle relearn cannot be done if any of these items are out of spec or are missing for even a second during the procedure.

Battery voltage must be more than 12.9 V engine running at idle
Engine coolant temperature must be 158 – 212°F
Shift lever must be in neutral or park
Electric load switches OFF. That means no A/C, headlamp, rear window defogger
If you have daytime running lights (DRL) do this procedure to shut them off:
BEFORE starting the engine:
Apply the parking brake, or set the lighting switch to the 1st position.
Steering wheel must be in straight-ahead position) position and vehicle must be stopped
Transmission must be at fully warm temp
On CVT models, drive vehicle for at least 10 mins before starting procedure.

Perform the IDLE AIR VOLUME PROCEDURE first

YOU WILL NEED A STOPWATCH TO DO THIS

You cannot do this procedure if you have an accelerator pedal position sensor trouble code stored.
DO this first

Perform ACCELERATOR PEDAL RELEASED POSITION LEARNING procedure at the 2nd step of the idle relearn:

ENGINE COLD
Perform “Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning” .
Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
WAIT over 10 seconds before this next step.
Perform “Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning” .
Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
Turn ignition switch “ON”. WAIT EXACTLY ONE SECOND SHARP. Turn ignition switch “OFF”
THEN wait at least 10 seconds.
Make sure that throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.
Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.

Drive for 15 MINUTES, this will make for correct operating temperatures to happen within the engine for the following steps. Warming your car in the garage in the morning apparently does not cut it.

Then perform the THROTTLE VALVE CLOSED POSITION LEARNING procedure

Warm up the engine
Turn the key to OFF and wait at least 10-secs.
Foot off the pedal, turn key to ON and 3-secs.
Repeat the following procedure quickly FIVE times within 5 seconds.
Pedal to the floor, then full release.
After the 5 pedal presses, wait 7 seconds and depress the accelerator pedal to the floor again and keep it there for approx. 20 seconds until the malfunction light stops blinking and turns ON steady.
Release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after malfunction light stops blinking and turns ON steady.
Start engine and let it idle. Then check idle speed and ignition timing.

To do a Mixture Ratio Self Learning Value Clear procedure

Engine at operating temp.
Turn key to OFF
Disconnect the MAF sensor harness connector.
Restart the engine and let it idle for at least 5-secs.
Stop engine and reconnect MAF connector
You should have a malfunction light after this procedure with trouble code P0102 stored. That confirms the reset was done correctly. Use your code reader or scan tool to clear the code.
If any of the following conditions occur after the engine has started, eliminate the cause of the incident and perform Idle Air Volume Learning all
If you get any of these issues, repeat the entire procedure again:
The Engine stalls. Idle speed is wrong.
