Why carmakers install start-stop systems in cars

Carmakers install start-stop systems to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions

Start-stop systems can save up to 8% to 13% in fuel in stop and go driving.

How start/stop systems improve fuel efficiency

By stopping the engine when it’s not needed at a complete stop, such as at traffic lights or in heavy traffic. When the engine isn’t running, it’s obviously not using fuel, which reduces overall fuel consumption and saves money for the driver. Depending on the type of driving you do, start/stop technology can save up to 8% to 12% in fuel costs if you do a lot of stop and go driving. Start/stop saves very little if you do mostly freeway driving.

Start-stop systems reduce pollution

By reducing the time the engine spends idling, the system also reduce harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This contributes to lower vehicle emissions and helps automakers meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and emissions standards.

Stopping the engine also reduces wear and tear and provides reduced noise and vibration

Prolonged idling is not good for your engine or motor oil. Oil can’t cool as well when you’re in stop and go traffic or idling for long periods. Shutting off the engine also provides less noise and vibration in the cabin, creating a more comfortable and quieter stopped environment.

It’s important to note that while start/stop systems offer many benefits, they may not be suitable for all driving conditions or preferences. Some drivers find them inconvenient or simply annoying and disable them if their driving patterns involve frequent short stops and starts. However, for urban and stop-and-go driving, stopping the engine can make a significant difference in fuel economy and emissions reduction.

Carmakers allow you to turn off the start-stop system once per drive cycle. But it will automatically become active again on the next restart.
