Ford 10R80 Transmission Problems: What you need to know

Common Ford 10R80 Transmission Problems

In addition to the many class action lawsuits, government safety regulators and industry analysts are actively investigating the underlying issues related to the Ford 10R80 transmission problems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals over 3,400 complaints concerning Ford’s 10-speed transmission as of January 2023, affecting all models equipped with this gearbox. These real-world accounts from a variety of owners highlight the seriousness and prevalence of the transmission issues.

Problem #1 Solenoid and Valve Body Problems

Ford 10R80 solenoid valve body

Ford 10R80 solenoid valve body

The 10R80 transmission features six linear force shift solenoids (A-F). Unlike normal transmission shift solenoids, which pulse transmission fluid pressure to operate clutch packs and bands, the solenoids in the Ford 10R80 transmission are mechanical—no transmission fluid flows through them.

These solenoids use a CIDAS armature and pin assembly to move a control valve in the main valve body, regulating the application of hydraulic fluid pressure. Each clutch (A-F) is managed by its corresponding shift solenoid (A-F). The operation of these solenoids is directly proportional, meaning that zero electrical current results in zero hydraulic pressure, while maximum current delivers maximum pressure. If the power supply to the transmission solenoids is disrupted, all solenoids default to an electrically “OFF” state, preventing any of the clutch packs from engaging and leaving no fail-safe mode for continued operation.

The solenoid valve body is prone to electrical problems and wear

This intricate setup where varying voltages move the solenoid in varying amounts is proving to be a problem. Customers complain about clunky, poorly timed, or “confused” shifting behavior as these issues arise. Ford has issued multiple software updates and claims that 80% of all shifting complaints can be solved with these software updates. However, the problems persist and many require a valve body replacement to try to solve the shifting problems.

Problem #2 Pump Drive Gear Failure

Most recently, shops have seen higher incidences of pump drive gear failure, which has primarily been reported in diesel vehicles. The pump drive gear failure presents as a whining noise similar to a converter issue coming from the transmission. Ford considers this to be normal due to the straight-cut gears, which naturally produce more noise.

Problem #3 – The Torque Converter

Both GM and Ford are experiencing torque converter problems in this jointly designed transmission. The torque converter problem stems from the non-flat friction surface and stator assembly.

P0741 and P1744 Trouble Codes

The torque converter problems show up with P0741 and P1744 and customer complaints of a shudder. The problems are caused by a sticking TCC Regulator Valve or sticking shift solenoids. In some cases, there may be limited repair options available for the valve body. If this occurs, replacing the entire valve body is necessary to resolve the issue.

If you’re having Ford 10R80 transmission problems and not getting a resolution from Ford, you can file a complaint with the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration.
