How to find an exhaust leak

Test for an exhaust leak

The easiest way to find an exhaust leak is to pressure the exhaust system using an ordinary shop vacuum and a spray bottle filled with water and dishwashing detergent.

How to connect your shop vacuum to your car’s exhaust

Move the hose to the exhaust port on your shop vac.

Use duct tape to secure the nozzle end of the hose to your tailpipe. If you have dual exhaust pipes, seal off one of the tailpipes with duct tape.

How to conduct the exhaust leak test

Turn on the shop vacuum to pressurize the entire exhaust system.

Starting at the engine exhaust manifold, spray each connection with soapy water. If there’s a leak, you’ll see the soapy water start to foam. Continue spraying each joint in the system until you find the leak
