How to perform a PassLock Reset Procedure

GM’s PassLock anti-theft system is plagued with problems and they can leave  you stranded. But you can get going again by using the PassLock reset procedure until you can get it fixed properly.

The sensor in the lock cylinder case is the most common failure point on this system. When it fails, it can leave you stranded. To get going, perform this passlock reset procedure. Then get it fixed properly

The problem with the system is a faulty sensor in the lock cylinder case. This made some sense, given the technology at the time. GM figured that thieves would just a slide hammer and yank the lock cylinder out and use a screwdriver to turn the ignition switch. So they mounted a sensor inside the lock cylinder case. If you pull the lock cylinder and try to turn the ignition switch with a screwdriver, you’ll activate the anti-theft system. Unfortunately, the sensor can fail on its own and strand you.

GM made several different types of anti-theft systems. VATS, PassKey, and PassLock. The troubleshoot and reset procedures are different for each. PassLock seems to have the highest failure rate. So if you have a key WITHOUT a chip in it, chances are it’s a PassLock system. Follow the links below for information on how to troubleshoot and fix a PassLock system.

Passlock Reset procedure

Make sure the battery is fully charged because this procedure may take up to 30 minutes and you can’t start the vehicle during this time. The instrument panel cluster (IPC). BCM and PCM must be in working order and the Passkey system repaired

1. Turn the key to ON and attempt to start the engine and release the key to the ON position.
2. The SECURITY light will illuminate. Wait 10 minutes until it turns off.
3. Turn the key to OFF for 10 seconds.
4. Turn the key to ON and attempt to start the engine. If it starts and run, the system has reset. If it doesn’t start or run and release the key to the ON position and complete the rest of the steps.
5. The SECURITY light will illuminate. Wait 10 minutes until it turns off.
6. Turn the key to OFF and wait 10 seconds.
7. Turn the key to ON and attempt to start the engine and release the key to the ON position.
8. The SECURITY light will illuminate. Wait 10 minutes until it turns off.
9. Turn the key to OFF and wait 10 seconds.
10. Start the engine

Some companies make passlock bypass systems to avoid tearing the steering column apart to replace the lock cylinder case. This website shows you how to bypass the sensor and permanently fix the problem
