TIPM rebuilders — How to deal with a bad TIPM

Fix a bad TIPM by getting yours rebuilt from one of these TIPM rebuilders

The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is a critical component TIPMin many Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles. The TIPM is a fuse box, relay box and electronic module all in one. It houses all of the important fuses and power relays in the vehicle. Unfortunately, TIPM failure is a common problem. When it fails, it can cause all kinds of electrical problems. You can’t fix it yourself. You have two choices; buy a new one from the dealer or send yours to one of the TIPM rebuilders listed below.

How the TIPM unit works

Rather than have individual relays located throughout the vehicle, the totally integrated power module locates them all in one place with large power cables providing all the power needed to run the relays. The relays can be activated from the PCM by grounding the relay control coil or by sending a digital command along the data bus to the TIPM.

Here’s an example: In older vehicles, pressing the horn button would complete the ground to the horn relay. But in modern vehicles, the horn button is just a signal to the PCM or body control module requesting horn operation. The PCM or BCM sees the request and sends a digital notice to the module to operate the horn relay.

Carmakers do this so you can remotely start your engine in winter, set the heat and blower motor speeds, open the sunroof, etc.

Why the TIPM units fail

In simple terms, it’s just inept engineering. The module is located in the engine compartment where it’s exposed to heat and road splash. Chrysler engineers did a really poor job of weatherproofing the circuit boards, so they corrode.

Failing TIPM Symptoms

The symptoms of a failing TIPM can vary depending on the vehicle. The most effected brands tend to be Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge from 2007-2015.

• Horn doesn’t work or sounds on it’s own
• Wipers don’t work or act erratically.
• Engine cranks but won’t fire up due to corrosion on the fuel pump relay circuit or burned up fuel pump from running full time
• Erratic instrument cluster operation
• Airbags don’t deploy during a crash or deploy on their own
•  Power windows don’t work
• The engine stalls while driving

Diagnosing the module can be difficult without a scan tool with live data.
