Troubleshooting the P0441 Code on a Dodge
Everything You Need to Know About the P0441 Code on a Dodge
AP0441 code on a Dodge is a common trouble code that indicates an issue with the evaporative emission control system (EVAP). Specifically, this code means there is an “Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow” detected. The EVAP system is crucial for controlling the emissions from the fuel system, preventing gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. When the P0441 code appears, diagnosing and fixing the issue promptly is essential to ensure your vehicle runs efficiently and complies with emissions regulations. This article will guide you through understanding, diagnosing, and fixing a P0441 code on a Dodge.

Understanding the P0441 Code
The P0441 code on a Dodge signifies that the engine control module (ECM) has detected an incorrect purge flow rate in the EVAP system. The EVAP system uses a purge valve or solenoid to control the flow of fuel vapors from the charcoal canister to the intake manifold. When this system fails, it can cause various issues, including increased emissions, poor engine performance, and reduced fuel efficiency.
Key Components Involved:
EVAP Purge Valve/Solenoid: Regulates the flow of fuel vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine.
Charcoal Canister: Stores fuel vapors from the fuel tank until they are ready to be burned in the engine.
Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor: Monitors the pressure in the fuel tank and helps control the EVAP system.
Hoses and Lines: Connect various components of the EVAP system and transport vapors and air.
Common Symptoms of a P0441 Code
When a P0441 code is triggered, you may notice several symptoms:
• Check Engine Light: The most obvious sign is the illumination of the Check Engine Light (CEL) on your dashboard.
• Poor Engine Performance: You may experience rough idling, stalling, or reduced engine power.
• Decreased Fuel Efficiency: The vehicle may consume more fuel than usual.
• Failed Emissions Test: A P0441 code can cause your vehicle to fail an emissions inspection.
The conditions needed to set a P0441 code on a Dodge
Before the vehicle tests the evaporative emissions system, it must first meet these criteria
• The Evaporative System Integrity Monitor (ESIM) Switch closed during last ignition off cycle or the large leak test is active.
• Battery voltage above 11.0 volts.
• Fuel level is between 12% and 88%.
• Ambient temperature is between 4°C (39.2°F) and 35°C (95°F).
• Engine run time since start is less than 30 minutes.
• No Purge Solenoid control circuit DTCs active.
P0441 will be set if
The Powertrain Control Module detects that the change (delta) in fuel tank pressure is below a calibrated threshold during side 1 (Purge Solenoid ramped up) or side 2 (Purge Solenoid ramped down) of both the nonintrusive and intrusive diagnostic.

How to diagnose P0441 Dodge
Start by checking the hoses for purge solenoid. Look for cracks in the hoses, pinched areas or internal restriction. Also check to make sure there’s no liquid gas or charcoal grains in the lines. If you find charcoal, that’s an indication that the charcoal canister has failed.
Using a bi-directional scan tool, command the purge valve to open and close. If you don’t have a scan tool, apply power and ground to the solenoid. Apply the vacuum to one side of the purge valve and make sure it holds the vacuum when closed and opens and closes easily when operated.
Next, check the Evaporative System Integrity Monitor (ESIM) vacuum switch by blowing gently into the ESIM unit through the vent hose. Do this while checking the voltage on the violet/grey wire. The voltage should drop to 0-volts while blowing into the line. If it doesn’t check the ground connection at the brown/white wire. If the ground connection is good but the voltage doesn’t drop the ESIM is faulty and must be replaced.
Next, check the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. Remove the gas cap. Then turn the IGN to ON but don’t start the engine. Using a voltmeter check the FTP. With the cap off, voltage should read between 2.3 and 2.7 volts.
