How to Clean a Chevy Throttle Body: Step-by-Step Guide
Tips for Cleaning a Chevy Throttle Body: A Complete Guide
Cleaning the throttle body of your Chevy is an essential maintenance task that can improve engine performance, fuel efficiency, and idling smoothness. The throttle body controls the amount of air entering the engine, and over time, it can accumulate carbon deposits and other debris, causing it to function improperly. Here’s a complete guide on how to clean a Chevy throttle body:
Tools and supplies you’ll need to clean a throttle body
• Throttle body cleaner (specifically designed for this purpose)
• Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
• Wrenches and socket set
• Old toothbrush or soft bristle brush
• Clean, lint-free cloths or rags
• Safety gloves and goggles
• Pliers
• New throttle body gasket
Step-by-step Guide to Clean a Chevy Throttle Body
NOTE: You have to remove an electronic throttle body from the manifold. Shooting the throttle body cleaner directly onto the plate can let the liquid wick into the electronics and damage the unit.
1) Remove the engine cover and air intake duct— You may need a screwdriver or socket set to remove clamps or screws holding the duct in place. Disconnect any electrical connectors to the MAF sensor or vacuum hoses connected to the duct
2) Remove the throttle body from the engine— You may have to remove and clamp off engine coolant lines on some engines. Disconnect the electrical connector to the throttle body and put it aside. They remove the bolts holding the throttle body to the intake manifold. Move it to your workbench
3) Inspect the throttle body before cleaning— Visually inspect the throttle body for any obvious damage or wear. Check for carbon buildup and other contaminants around the throttle plate and the interior surface.
4) Clean the Throttle Body— Spray the throttle body cleaner on a rag and use the rag to remove the carbon buildup. Open the throttle plate by hand and wipe the throttle opening and the throttle plate. Do NOT spray the cl

5) Wipe clean with a fresh rag.
6) Install the new throttle body gasket and reinstall the throttle body onto the intake manifold, following the true specification in the shop manual. Reconnect any coolant hoses you’ve removed.
7) Reconnect the throttle body electrical connector and reattach the Air Intake Duct. Ensure all the clamps and screws are securely fastened, and reconnect any sensors or wires.
8). Start the Engine and perform the GM throttle body relearn procedure found here.
