The Hyundai and Kia ABS Recall now includes up to 3.3 Million vehicles. The ABS recall is due to a fault in the ABS system that could result in vehicle fires while parked or while driving.

A faulty ABS module develops and internal leak that causes an underhood fire

Here’s what the Hyundai and Kia ABS recall is about. Brake fluid in the ABS module can leak internally and cause an electrical short. An electrical short could result in significant over current in the ABS module, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire while driving or parked.

This is issue has plagued the company globally and resulted in at least four major recall incidents within the United States. The federal agency estimates the number of vehicles within the 3.3 million recalled with the defect at approximately 1%

The dealer will replacing the ABS module for free to prevent the leak and fire

The Hyundai and Kia ABS recall involves remove the old module and replacing it with a newer design that prevents the internal leak.

Park outside until the ABS recall is performed

In a statement about the recalls from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, owners of these vehicles are being told, “Until these recalled vehicles have been repaired, the manufacturers say the safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures. Fires can occur whether the vehicle is parked and turned off or while driving.”

To date, neither company know of any crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with this defect. There have been 25 related vehicle fires in the United States as well as 28 thermal incidents, including visible smoke, burning and melting.

Hyundai plans to notify owners to bring their vehicles to the nearest dealership to replace the ABS module fuse. Kia is still working on a remedy.
