All OBDII code readers and scan tools are capable of displaying “generic” powertrain “P” trouble codes from the ECM. A generic code is one that has the same meaning across all carmakers, as opposed to a manufacturer specific code that can be defined by the car maker. In this article I’m listing the full list of Generic OBDII P trouble codes

The History of OBDII P trouble codes

On-board diagnostics, or OBD, refers to a vehicle’s self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to state of health information for various vehicle sub-systems. The first crude OBD systems were introduced in the early 1980s, and have evolved over time to provide more detailed diagnostic information and capabilities.

The first system is now referred to as OBD-I. It was designed to monitor some basic engine functions and alert the driver through a dashboard warning light if issues were detected. These early systems had very limited diagnostic capability and provided no information to help troubleshoot issues.

Introduction of OBDII

In 1988, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandated that all vehicles sold in California beginning in 1994 must have some basic OBD capability. This regulation was called OBDII, and outlined specific emissions-related components that must be monitored, such as the catalytic converter. The regulation also standardized the type of diagnostic connector required, making repair easier. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) soon followed by making OBDII mandatory for all cars and light trucks sold in the United States beginning in 1996.

OBD-II Capabilities

Unlike the very basic OBDI systems, OBDII provides extensive diagnostic capability. The system monitors a wide array of vehicle sensors that relate to emissions control and performance. Issues are reported through a standardized series of diagnostic trouble codes. OBDII systems also allow for real-time sensor data monitoring, which helps troubleshoot problems. The widespread adoption of OBDII was a major advancement for vehicle repair and emissions control capabilities.

As technology has continued to advance, so have OBD systems. Modern OBD implementations provide even greater sensor coverage of engine and transmission components. Connectivity with scanning tools provides extensive troubleshooting and analysis capabilities. Some newer systems can even leverage wireless connectivity to share diagnostic data through mobile apps and internet connectivity. Future capabilities may include proactive health monitoring that alerts the driver to issues before they cause breakdowns or failures. The continued evolution of OBD makes vehicles safer, easier to repair, and better for the environment.
