P0846 Code on Nissan — Service Bulletin Fix

Learn what the P0846 Code means for a Nissan vehicle and how to fix it

Nissan has issued a service bulletin #NTB17-034h to address a transmission judder (shake, shudder, single or multiple bumps or vibration), hesitation on acceleration, lack of power or RPM flare, along with P0846 Code and/or P0746 or P0965 on the vehicles listed below.

The service bulletin lists several items to check for wear including the counter shaft bearing and the condition of the CVT drive belt. In most cases, this transmission is going to require professional repair. None of the checks listed in the service bulletin are DIY-friendly.

With Non-turbo engines and a CVT transmission

How to diagnose the transmission codes

1) Start by reviewing all the trouble codes. If you see P2857, P2858, P2859, or P285A present, this service bulletin does NOT apply
2) If you hear abnormal transmission noise and the noise occurs in PARK or NEUTRAL but stops when you shift into Drive or Reverse with the brakes applied, then this service bulletin does NOT apply.
3) Check for debris in the transmission drain pan. If so, the CVT transmission must be replaced. If there’s no debris move to the next step.
4) Is P1750 code stored in the computer? If yes, remove the CVT transmission, disassemble it and check for couter shaft bearing wear. This should be performed by a competent shop.
5) If P1750 isn’t stored, check for CVT belt slip. This requires a borescope and should be done by a shop. If there’s evidence of belt slip, the transmission must be rebuilt. If no belt slippage is seen, replace just the valve body
