If you’ve ever wondered how a kitchen sink can work perfectly one week and barely drain the next, the answer usually starts much earlier.

Imagine pouring warm bacon grease down the drain. While it’s warm, it flows easily enough. But farther along the drainpipe, that grease encounters cooler surfaces. It begins sticking to the pipe walls.

Then you wash another pan. More grease goes down. Food particles and soap residue begin sticking to the existing layer. Eventually, the usable opening inside the pipe gets smaller until water struggles to pass through it.

Never intentionally pour cooking grease down your kitchen drain. Put bacon fat, cooking oil, and pan drippings into a used tin cap and allow it to cool and solidify. Then dispose of it in the trash.

Washing soda is sodium carbonate, a strongly alkaline household cleaning compound commonly sold as a laundry booster or general-purpose cleaner.

It is important to understand what it isn’t.

• Washing soda is not baking soda. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Although their names sound similar, they are different compounds.

That distinction matters when you’re trying to clear a grease-clogged sink.

Washing soda’s alkalinity makes it effective against oily, greasy soils. In practical terms, an alkaline solution helps loosen and break up greasy material so water can carry it away more easily.

That makes washing soda particularly useful when a kitchen drain has accumulated grease, food sludge and soap residue.

Why I Prefer Washing Soda Before Harsh Chemical Drain Cleaner

There is a time and place for specialized plumbing products, but I don’t like treating every slow drain as though it requires the strongest possible chemistry.

Some commercial drain cleaners contain highly caustic or acidic ingredients. If the product fails to clear the blockage, those chemicals can remain in the standing water and trap. That creates an additional hazard for anyone who later has to open the plumbing.

For an ordinary grease-related clogged sink, washing soda provides a less aggressive option.

There is another advantage: it encourages you to think about the cause of the clog instead of simply pouring increasingly powerful chemicals into a pipe.

The important question is: What is actually blocking the drain?

If it is grease and organic residue, washing soda may help. If a utensil, bottle cap, wipe, or other solid object is lodged in the plumbing, no amount of washing soda is going to make that object disappear.

How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink With Washing Soda

When I’m dealing with a slow or clogged kitchen sink that appears to be caused by grease buildup, this is the process I would follow based on the source method.

Step 1: Remove the Standing Water — If the sink is full, remove most of the standing water with a cup or small container (or a wet vac). You want the washing soda to get into the drain and make contact with the buildup instead of immediately becoming diluted in a sink full of water.
Step 2: Add One Cup of Washing Soda — Pour 1 cup of washing soda directly into the clogged drain. If you have a double kitchen sink, concentrate the treatment on the affected drain.
Step 3: Add Hot Tap Water — Follow the washing soda with approximately 1 quart of hot tap water. Notice that I said hot—not boiling. Boiling water can damage plastic pipes, causing them to warp and leak
Step 4: Wait 30 to 60 Minutes for the washing soda to work — This is where patience matters. Give the washing soda 30 to 60 minutes to remain in contact with the greasy buildup. You’re trying to loosen accumulated material, not create an instant bubbling reaction.
Step 5: Flush the Kitchen Drain — Flush the drain thoroughly with additional hot tap water. If drainage has noticeably improved but remains slow, a stubborn grease buildup may require a second treatment.

What Not to Mix With Washing Soda

This is one rule I would not compromise on: Do not mix drain-cleaning products.

Never combine washing soda with:
• Bleach
• Vinegar
• Commercial drain cleaner
• Other unknown cleaning chemicals

If you have already poured a commercial chemical drain opener into a clogged sink, do not add washing soda afterward. Combining household cleaning chemicals can produce unpredictable and potentially dangerous reactions.

Also, don’t use washing soda around aluminum because alkaline cleaners can react with the metal.

How to Prevent Another Clogged Kitchen Sink

Once you get the water flowing again, don’t forget why the clog developed. Keep your pipes clean with a monthly maintenance routine using a cup of washing soda to prevent grease buildup.

• Pour ½ cup washing soda into the drain.
• Add approximately 1 quart hot tap water.
• Let it sit for about 20 minutes.
• Flush thoroughly with water.

Think of this as maintenance rather than emergency drain cleaning. You’re trying to deal with a thin film of residue before it becomes a thick obstruction.

More importantly, scrape food from dishes before washing them and keep fats, oils, and grease out of your sink.

Those simple habits will do more to prevent kitchen sink clogs than repeatedly treating the symptoms afterward.

When Washing Soda Won’t Clear a Clogged Sink

I also believe knowing when to stop is part of good DIY plumbing. If you have tried the washing-soda treatment twice without meaningful improvement, don’t keep pouring more products into the drain.

You could have a physical blockage that needs to be removed with a drain snake or by cleaning the sink trap.

And if water is backing up into several fixtures, the problem may extend beyond your kitchen sink. Multiple affected drains can indicate a larger drain or sewer-line issue that warrants professional diagnosis.

A clogged sink without harsh chemicals is often manageable when grease is the culprit. The trick is matching the solution to the problem. Washing soda can help loosen greasy organic buildup, but it cannot remove a fork from a trap or repair a blocked main line.

Start gently, understand what you’re dealing with, and know when the job has moved beyond a simple DIY drain cleaning.
