Ford Blower motor controller replacement in F-Series Trucks

How to replace the Ford blower motor controller in an F-Series truck

On late-model Ford F-series trucks equipped with variable-speed HVAC systems, Ford mounted the blower motor controller behind the heater box—an inconvenient and time-consuming location. This component acts like a modern, computer-controlled version of the old blower motor resistor. It adjusts the fan speed by pulsing voltage to the blower motor based on your settings.

According to the factory service manual, replacing this part requires full removal of the heater box—meaning you have to evacuate the A/C system first. In larger E and F series trucks, this job is listed at 8.3 to 10.5 hours of labor. But there’s a shortcut that can save you hours of work—and it doesn’t require touching the A/C lines.

The trick for removing the blower motor controller in Ford trucks

The key to this trick is removing screws from the firewall side so This image shows a Ford blower motor controlleryou can move the heater box out far enough to wiggle the blower motor controller out from behind the heater box. Here’s the step-by-step

1) Remove the Right Front Wheel Well Liner
Take out the liner to access three nuts securing the heater box studs. Remove the nuts and the bolt near the drain tube on the firewall.

2) Take Out the BCM and 4×4 Module
These modules are located under the dash. Remove them to make room to move the heater box slightly inward.

3) Remove the Blower Motor
Take out the blower motor to give yourself a clear view and pathway to the controller.

4) Peel Back the Carpet
Pull the carpet toward the seat to expose the area behind the heater box.

5) Gently Pry the Heater Box
Using plastic pry bars, gently shift the heater box into the cabin about an inch. Don’t force it—remember, the A/C lines are still attached, and you don’t want to damage them.

6) Unlock and Slide Out the Controller
Reach behind the heater box and press the locking tab at the top of the blower motor controller. Slide it toward the driver’s side until it clears the retaining clips.

7) Remove the Controller Through the Blower Motor Opening
Reach into the heater box from the blower motor hole. Rotate the front of the controller downward and roll it out through the same hole.

8) Install the New Controller
Disconnect the old unit’s electrical connector and plug it into the new one. Use the connector and harness to help guide the blower motor controller into position. Once aligned, roll it back in place and slide it into the retaining tabs until it locks.
